A Podcast episode with Scott Fuller
Greetings, beloved listeners and readers!
I am delighted to present the latest episode of “God-sized Stories,” where we delve into deep and inspiring discussions with individuals who are making a God-sized impact in their communities. In this episode, I had the immense pleasure of speaking with Scott Fuller, the Vice President of Advancement at Murphy-Harpst Children’s Centers in Georgia. His story, passion, and dedication to helping foster children are genuinely heartwarming and nothing short of inspiring.
Our conversation unraveled Scott’s profound journey of faith. Raised in Northwest Georgia, Scott’s path to spirituality was illuminated during his teenage years, especially following the tragic loss of his grandfather. His mother’s persistence in urging him to attend church eventually led Scott to a youth group where he truly encountered the Lord. This pivotal moment transformed Scott’s life, steering him away from a career in law and politics to full-time gospel ministry.
Scott has been an ordained minister for 30 years and has served in various capacities from church planting to pastoral work. However, his heart has always leaned towards child welfare, inspired initially by his grandparents, who were house parents at Georgia Baptist Children’s Home. Today, Scott’s leadership at Murphy Harpst Children’s Centers encapsulates his life’s calling, serving children who have experienced severe trauma and behavioral issues.
Murphy Harpst Children’s Centers
Murphy Harpst Children’s Centers, which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, is a testament to God’s intricate tapestry of grace and provision. Founded by two remarkable women—Sarah Murphy and Ethel Harpst—each committed to caring for abandoned and impoverished children, their separate paths merged to create an enduring legacy. Today, Murphy Harpst continues to provide comprehensive care for foster children, from residential programs on their 160-acre campus, featuring equine therapy and therapeutic services, to innovative family-style foster care systems.
Scott highlighted the critical role the Church plays in this mission. He emphasized that without the volunteer and financial support from church communities, their mission would be considerably hampered. Scott passionately encouraged more churches to get involved in foster care ministry, citing the biblical mandate to care for orphans and widows as central to the Christian faith.
Scott’s yearning for more foster families to rise amidst a staggering statistic of 14,000 children in foster care in Georgia with only about 3,500 foster families is a clarion call for us all.
I urge you to listen to this episode and pray about how you can be part of this God-sized story. Whether through fostering, volunteering, financial support, or spreading the word, every little action counts. Let’s rally around our children in need and embody the hands and feet of Christ.
